Peter Sarstedt is not French, despite the flourishing accordion that opens this little gem. He was born in India, and later moved to England. As for his musical career, he has released various albums over the years but will likely go down in history as a one-hit wonder. Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?, was the UK’s number one single in February, 1969. It paints a picture of a time-honoured rags to riches story; of the poor who girl becomes a member of the jet-set. There is, however, a hint that she may not be as happy as she seems, and this is the story teller’s caution for the listener. Sarstedt shared the 1969 Ivor Novello Award with David Bowie (Space Oddity), for songwriting and composing. No, I hadn’t heard of this award either – but I’m sure it’s prestigious.
