In 1967, eight students from the Basque region of Spain decided to form a musical group to be known as Voces y Guitarras or "Voices and Guitars". Heavily influenced by the Beatles, they performed locally for about a year. When they sent demo cassette to producer Juan Carlos Calderón, he signed them with the new name, Mocedades, which means "youth”.

Mocedades was very successful over the years in the Spanish market, releasing some 22 albums from 1969 to 2008. Their claim to fame, however, is a song that was only a runner up for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973. Eres Tú, “You are” was soon released as a single in 1974, and hit the world by storm. It became the highest-ranking Spanish song on the US Billboard charts, peaking at #9.

Among the many cover versions, an English language version by Eydie Gorme was re-named Touch The Wind. However, none of the other versions fared anywhere near as well as the original. Speaking of original, the song was accused of plagiarism because of its similarity to a 1966 Yugoslav entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. It was called Brez besed.

Bet you didn’t know that.

Neither did I.
