You Can Get It If You Really Want It - Jimmy Cliff, 1972

Chorus:
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
But you must try, try and try
Try and try
You'll succeed at last

Persecution you must bear
Win or lose, you got to get your share
You've got your mind set on a dream
You can get it, though hard it may seem, now

Chorus

I know it - listen
Rome was not built in a day
Opposition will come your way
But the harder the battle you see
It's the sweeter the victory, now

Chorus (x2)

Jimmy Cliff was born in St. James, Jamaica. He helped popularize Reggae in the mainstream music world, but was also a minor movie star. In the late '60s, Cliff moved to the UK, and recorded a few minor hits with Island Records. Vietnam, written in 1970, was referred to by Bob Dylan as the best protest song he'd ever heard.

Back home again, Jimmy Cliff starred in a 1972 Jamaican crime film, The Harder They Come. Directed by Perry Henzell, this film became a hit in the US when it was released to the so-called Midnight Movie audiences across the country... it was in good company with the likes of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

As well as the star of The Harder They Come, Jimmy Cliff wrote and recorded the soundtrack with notable hits like the title song, along with the classic reggae standards Many Rivers To Cross, Sitting in Limbo and You Can Get It If You Really Want It. These have since been covered by such varied artists as Keith Richards, Joe Cocker, Cher, Willie Nelson, UB40, Gerry Garcia and Fiona Apple, to name but a few.
