Formed in 1977 by brothers Mark and David Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers, Dire Straits was a contrast to the established stadium rock bands, and the rapidly forming Punk Rock scene. Songs like Sultans of Swing, Brothers In Arms, Industrial Disease and Money For Nothing were quieter and more complex. The lyrics of these works are more engaging, inviting the listener to react on more of a cerebral level. Money For Nothing went as far as slamming the whole pop music business, starting with MTV videos. (I love the very early computer graphics used in the video!)
With a name like ExtendedancEPlay, it was obvious that this 4 track release was something different for Dire Straits. And of course, the song I chose is also uncharacteristic of the band's mostly slower and introspective songs. Twisting By The Pool was successfully charted on Billboard during 1983, although it was never released as a single. In case you're interested, the name Dire Straits refers to the band's financial state of affairs when they were first starting out. However, after 1 Juno, 3 BRIT and 4 Grammy awards the band couldn't really complain.
