Rock On - David Essex, 1973

(Ooh - sshook)

Hey did you rock and roll
Rock on, ooh my soul
Hey did you boogie too, did ya
Hey shout, summertime blues
Jump up and down in your blue suede shoes
Hey did you rock and roll, rock on

And where do we go from here
Which is a way that's clear
Still looking for that blue jean baby queen
Prettiest girl I ever seen
See her shake on the movie screen
Jimmy Dean
(James Dean)

And where do we go from here
Which is a way that's clear
Still looking for that blue jean baby queen
Prettiest girl I ever seen
See her shake on the movie screen
Jimmy Dean
Jimmy Dean
Rock on - rock on

Hey did you rock and roll - rock on
Hey did you rock and roll - rock on
Hey did you rock and roll - rock on

Actor/musician David Essex started his professional career in 1971, when he was chosen to play the role of Jesus in the stage musical, Godspell. For what it's worth, he won the Variety Club of Great Britain's award for "Most Promising Newcomer."

Essex wrote Rock On in 1973. It was released as a very successful single that year, and was also included on the soundtrack of That'll Be The Day, which just so happened to star David Essex. The story follows a frustrated Rock 'n Roller as he tries to find meaning in his life. Gritty realism is helped along with a supporting cast that includes Ringo Starr, The Who's drummer Keith Moon, and Billy Fury. The movie's title, of course, refers to the Buddy Holly song from 1957.

Rock On is a tribute to the early days of Rock n' Roll and the disenchanted youth subculture of the 1960s. Most obvious is the mention of James Dean, the original rebel. Early '50s songs such as Summertime Blues (Eddie Cochran - 1958) and Blue Suede Shoes (Carl Perkins - 1956) are included in the lyrics, as well.

Here is his groovy, laid-back 1973 performance of Rock On.
