Gimme Little Sign - Brenton Wood, 1967

If you do want me, gimme little sugar
If you don't want me, don't lead me on girl
But if you need me, show me that you love me
And when I'm feeling blue and I want you
There's just one thing that you should do

Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you're mine girl
Oh yeah
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my darling
To show that you're mine girl
All right

If you do want me, gimme little sweet talk
If you don't want me, don't lead me on girl
But if you need me, show me that you love me
And when I'm feeling down, wearing a frown
You be there when I look around

Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you're mine girl
All right
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you're mine girl
All right

Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you're mine girl
Oh yeah
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my darling
To show that you're mine girl
All right

Just gimme some kind of sign
Sign
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby

He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana as Alfred Jesse Smith. Soon after, his family moved to Comptin in the southern suburbs of Los Angeles. He attended Compton College, and this is where he adopted his stage name, probably from the nearby, wealthy enclave of Brentwood.

Brenton Wood signed with Double Shot Records in 1967, and in the spring, he released The Oogum Boogum Song. This reached #19 on the Billboard R&B chart and #34 on the Billboard Hot 100. In September of that same year, he released the biggest hit of his career, Gimme Little Sign, which peaked at #9 in the US. Although he hasn't charted many singles since the late 60s, Brenton's music has been very popular with the oldies compilations, especially for Chicano audiences.

For anyone interested, Gimme Little Sign was featured on Beverly Hills 90210, Episode 28 of Season 4. The song is heard playing in the background at the Peach Pit, where all the rich kids used to hang out.
