Surfer bunny

The bunny is polymer clay and the wave is clear plastic resin. The resin is mixed with green and blue clear resin-coloring, with a pinch of grey opaque resin-colouring (just the tip of a match). A latex mold was made of a plasticine wave (that had an indentation for the surfboard), then the resin was poured in. The key to this effect was getting the wave to be the right colour and the right translucence. The translucency resulted from the pinch of grey solid colouring - too much and it becomes opaque.

The arms didn't turn out quite right on the first attempt, and, to my wife's dismay, I went out to the garage and ripped off the arms and did them again to make them look more like a balancing surfer. I'm quite happy with it now and the arms add a lot of realism.

This piece is extra fragile because the base is so heavy compared to the polymer clay and if anyone picks it up by the bunny, it's sure to break. Pretty well all of the pieces have been broken at one time or another. They are easy to fix however with just a dap of super glue.

Completed in 1993.
